Philippine Women Centre Calls for Volunteers to join their Political Fashion Show and help Stop Violence Against Filipino Women!

Vancouver, BC -- The Philippine Women Centre of BC (PWC) is calling on members and supporters of the Filipino community to volunteer at the upcoming political fashion show titled, “Scrap:  A Political Fashion Show to Stop Violence Against Filipino Women”.  This years’ show, taking place on October 26, involves the issues of Filipino women in Canada and abroad, facing all forms of violence.  Volunteers are needed for to help in the preparation of this cultural event to expose the reality of many Filipino women’s lives.

“Looking at the issue of violence against women has been ongoing for the PWC for many years.  Through gathering the women’s experiences, we found there are many Filipino women, some coming to Canada through the Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, who are victims of various forms of violence,” shares Niki Silva of PWC.  “It was only recently, that with some support from Status of Women Canada, are we able to help push forward programs and services including cultural presentations, for these women in order to help get them away from the violent situations they find themselves in,” Silva adds.

Designs will be inspired by the stories of the women who have or still face abuse.  “By taking the feelings that the stories of domestic workers evoke, we will present them visually in a form of fashion,” says Denise Valdecantos of PWC.  “By having the women share these stories with the community, it is a step forward in addressing and exposing their situation and a start in the process of empowerment.” Valdecantos says.

“Without the help of volunteers, putting on such a political fashion show would not be possible. Efforts help forward the work of PWC so Filipino victims of violence can continue to seek support and assistance,” explains Leah Diana, also a member of PWC.

“SCRAP” will take place this October 26, 2008 in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside at Centre A, located at the corner of Hastings and Carrall.

Volunteers are welcome to join meetings and get involved to learn about the current situation and be a part of the support for victims.  Volunteers are also welcome to stop by the Kalayaan Centre at 451 Powell Street, or call Niki at 604-215-1103 if they want to get involved.
