Philippine Women Centre of B.C. Media Release
Political Fashion Show to Question Philippine Independence
June 16, 2005
Vancouver, B.C. – This weekend, conventional avant-garde fashion will
be
pushed to its political limits. "Philippine Independence: Re-Veiled"
presented by the Philippine Women’s Centre of B.C. (PWC), and Sinag
Bayan Cultural Theatre Collective will awaken the senses, ignite
revolutionary verve and inspire action for social change.
"Unlike the typical fashion show with loud music and six-foot models,
ours is about uniting the Filipino community and stirring political
debate," explains Denise Valdecantos, board member of the PWC and
fashion show organizer.
"Philippine Independence: Re-Veiled is about the history of the
Philippines and the Filipino people’s will and determination for
genuine
independence," said Valdecantos.
Using the talent and creativity of the Filipino community, "Philippine
Independence: Reveiled" chronicles the triumphs and trials for
independence and the unfailing valour of the human spirit for freedom
amidst empire and imperialism. Using original poetry from Filipino
heroes, writers and artists, as well as from the speeches of historical
figures, the production is one fourth fashion, one fourth theatre, one
fourth political action and one fourth history lesson. It is altogether
an homage and critical analysis of Philippine Independence.
"With the corruption of the Arroyo presidency making international news
and because she maintains her anti-terrorist laws in accordance to that
of George Bush, it becomes more and more important for Filipinos and
Canadians to be more critical about the idea of independence in the
Philippines," continues Valdecantos. "The daily wage of the average
worker in Manila is not enough to meet his and her daily needs, and,
with Arroyo looking to export one million overseas workers this year
alone, it is evident that genuine independence for the Filipino people
does not exist," said Valdecantos.
To satirize the past and present situation of the Philippines, audience
members will hear characters portraying Inang Bayan (Mother
Philippines), US President William McKinley, former Philippine dictator
Ferdinand Marcos and current president Arroyo discuss and debate ideas
about Philippine independence. The audience will be able to view
through
original designs, themes of: the majestic rice terraces, the
Philippine-American War, the migration of Filipinos and family
separation personified and politicized.
