Stop the unjust deportation Filipino live-in caregivers Postcard Campaign

Support the Canada-wide campaign to stop the unjust deportation of Filipino live-in caregivers for Laila Elumbra and live-in caregivers facing arbitrary deportation under the Live-in Caregiver program.

Campaign Background

Elumbra is a Filipino live-in caregiver who came to Canad under the LCP. After working 22 months, Elumbra fell victim to the enzymatic disorder, Porphyria. Seizure, loss of speech, coma and paralysis were only the start of her problems. Having overcome this condition, Elumbra now faces the prospect of deportation.

The LCP requires that a worker must complete 24 months of live-in service within three years to be eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada. This puts her in a vulnerable situation of being deported for reason beyond her control such as illness, abusive and exploitationworking conditions or bureaucratic delays in working permit processing. In the case of Elumbra, she fell short of two months when she become ill.

Campaign Information

Elumbra is not alone. The Filipino Canadian community is very concerned with the alarming rise in unjust and arbitrary deportations of live-in caregivers due to the stringent requirements of the LCP and other barriers that subject them to percarious existence in Canada.

The National Alliance of Philippine Women in Canada (NAPWC), SIKLAB-Canada, and the Philippine Women Centre of Quebec has launched a Postcard Petition Campaign on this issue.
